The cull diary: letting go of expired cosmetics

I'm at it again... culling that is - but this time I am tackling my cosmetics "collection".

Introducing the cosmetics cull bucket:

Cosmetics manufactured when I was still young and didn't need to use them...

I wrote about collecting makeup and cosmetics as being akin to collecting perishable foodstuffs in this post... at the time of my move I neglected to sort through my *ahem* collection of unopened products.  Let's just pretend that I didn't throw out an unopened cleanser that was manufactured in 2003!!!

Yes, I confess that on many occasions I have been sucked into buying an extra product just to qualify for the 'gift with purchase' only to never use all my free gifts, let alone the extra product (which I didn't even need in the first place).  So what you can't see in the picture above is the bottom of my cosmetics cull bucket - 3 bottles of Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion (does anyone out there actually like this stuff?) have been laid to rest tonight.  Also featuring heavily are half used fake tans... in my old age I have learned to accept my pale skin.

So anyway, it's true. Cosmetics expire.  You can check the manufacture dates of branded cosmetics that you are slathering on your skin on this site

Happy cosmetics culling! x

  1. Wow thank you so much I just throw away half a shelf! Mostly lipsticks and eyeshadows that I didn't use anyway, but some of my favorite stuff turned out to be expired as well, creepy:( Guess I'm going make up shopping tomorrow:)

  2. Haha, I LOVE the feeling you get after throwing away all of your useless cosmetics.. of course you're throwing away your money but see it as a lesson... (that I never learn).

    1. Yes, it felt quite liberating (and I have a spare shelf now!) but at the same time it made me feel a little stupid. So much money wasted! I *think* I have learned my lesson.

    1. 'stockpile' and 'perishable' are two words which do not belong together :) Happy culling!

  4. Haha I LOVE Clinique Dramatically Different Lotion! I'm nearly out too, I would have loved to take your bottles off your hands :P But I'm assuming they were expired :)

Well done! I need to tackle my dressing table and bathroom cupboards and chuck out all my old skincare products.

    xx

  5. in my experience a lot of expiration dates are not set in stone! mascara is the only product that consistently turns rancid for me before i use it up though :)

    1. I tend to agree, but I think a potion manufactured in 2003 does not belong on my face! Ordinarily I tend to go by smell and appearance and yes, mascara tends to go icky before I use it all up. Lancome ones being the biggest culprits I find.

  6. Oh good lord do I need to do this! I take some silly enjoyment from having my own personal Sephora in my medicine cabinet but when half of them are expired or are only in there because they look horrid on me, then what's the point?

    1. Yes, I think I *had* the same problem but I have noticed lately that I get more enjoyment from actually finishing a cosmetic - a sense of accomplishment :)

  7. I always have to remind myself to throw away my mascara. It' easy to forget the shelf life, sometimes.
It's funny you mention age: I will occasionally read reviews of so-called anti ageing products online, and am always amazed that the reviewers turn out to be girls in their late teens to early twenties, complaining that the product didnt make them look younger! I am sure that the issue of ageing is worse when we are young, haaha! And then once we start to actually get older, we tend to chill the hell out! That said, I'm in my late 30's now, as of next week, and still cannot use these products: they make my skin kinda angry and sore.

I need to do a bit of research, really, for I am clueless about how long to hold onto a lipstick?

    1. I have sensitive skin so can relate to what you are saying, but in any event at the end of the day there are no miracle potions that prevent 'aging' anyway ... there is botox, but that prevents 'expressions' ;) It's our genetic makeup is what dictates how WELL we age and the apperance of our skin.

For me I find that drinking plenty of water, protecting my skin from the sun and moisturising my skin keeps it looking good. I have used 'anti-aging' creams before but at the end of the day I realised that all that is needed is mega hydration to keep skin looking plump.

With respect to lipstick - I go by smell. I find that when a lipstick starts to turn it gets a plasticine type smell to it and it tastes bad.

  8. I did this to my bathroom last week and it took aaaaaaages :( but my cupboards look so much nicer and can see everything a lot easier now! xx

    1. I threw out a lot too. I find that if you can actually see your products - you use them. If they are stuck at the back of a cupboard somewhere they get forgotten about and go off. I am definitely implementing the FIFO principle to my cosmetics from now on.
